Savinelli's patented triangular balsa insert fits a 6mm tenon: the fibrous balsa absorbs moisture before it reaches the stem, while many Dry System shapes also add a condensation reservoir in the shank. The balsa is flavour-neutral, unlike charcoal filters. You can smoke most Savinelli 6mm pipes without a filter — the tenon is simply exposed — but the balsa should be replaced every one to three bowls for the best experience.
Genuine Autographs are stamped on the shank with "SAVINELLI AUTOGRAPH" and "ITALY", with the grade numeral (3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 0, 00 or 000) stamped separately — higher numerals in the 3–8 range indicate a graded but more accessible pipe, while 0, 00 and the rare 000 are the prestige tier.
