    What makes a Savinelli

    The Dry System

Introduced in 1981 after years of in-house research, the Dry System combines a moisture reservoir in the shank with Savinelli's patented triangular balsa insert in a 6mm tenon. The balsa absorbs moisture while leaving flavour completely unaltered — for a characteristically cool, clean Italian smoke.

    The Autograph Freehand

Savinelli's flagship handmade line is carved from top-grade plateau briar using the traditional "shape first, drill second" method, so each pipe dictates its own form. Grades run from 3 up through 4, 5, 6, 8, then the prestige trio of 0, 00 and the pinnacle 000 — awarded only when grain, birdseye and proportion are collectively flawless.

    Four Generations, One Factory

Achille Savinelli Sr. opened the Milan tobacco shop in 1876; his grandson Achille Jr. opened the factory at Barasso, in the Varese province, in 1953, where Mediterranean briar is still cured, turned, stained with natural pigments and quality-checked in house under the fourth-generation family.

    1876

Achille Savinelli Sr. opens the tobacco shop at Via Orefici, steps from Milan's Piazza Duomo, and begins commissioning pipe designs from Milanese artisans.

    1881

Savinelli exhibits its pipe designs at the Esposizione Industriale Italiana, building a reputation for craftsmanship beyond the city.

    1953

Achille Savinelli Jr. establishes the dedicated briar factory at Barasso in the Varese province, where the lake climate aids briar curing; the Punto Oro prestige line follows.

    1981

Savinelli patents the Dry System — a shank reservoir and triangular balsa 6mm filter — its most distinctive technical innovation, still produced today.

Savinelli pipes in Australia — FAQ

Is there GST on pipes imported to Australia?+

Australian GST can apply to imported goods above the low-value threshold; couriers collect it on entry. Pipes already in Australia avoid it — seller locations are shown on every listing.

What is the Savinelli 6mm balsa filter system and do I have to use it?+

Savinelli's patented triangular balsa insert fits a 6mm tenon: the fibrous balsa absorbs moisture before it reaches the stem, while many Dry System shapes also add a condensation reservoir in the shank. The balsa is flavour-neutral, unlike charcoal filters. You can smoke most Savinelli 6mm pipes without a filter — the tenon is simply exposed — but the balsa should be replaced every one to three bowls for the best experience.

How do I read the grade on a Savinelli Autograph estate pipe?+

Genuine Autographs are stamped on the shank with "SAVINELLI AUTOGRAPH" and "ITALY", with the grade numeral (3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 0, 00 or 000) stamped separately — higher numerals in the 3–8 range indicate a graded but more accessible pipe, while 0, 00 and the rare 000 are the prestige tier. On pre-1970s estate pieces, watch for 4-digit shape codes, which date the pipe to before the transition to the 3-digit numbering adopted in the 1970s.
