A handmade pipe is shaped by one maker from a single block of briar (or meerschaum, morta or another material) rather than turned on a copying lathe to a factory pattern. The maker cuts the block, drills it, shapes the bowl and shank by hand and usually hand-cuts the stem from vulcanite, cumberland or acrylic. That is why no two are identical, and why the grain, the drilling and the stem work are what you are paying for.

Pipes from emerging makers selling directly here are often priced from well under a hundred dollars; established artisans run into the hundreds, and the top Danish and Japanese names trade for thousands on the estate market.
