The Briar Index

    How pipe brands move.

A living price index for collectible briar. Every figure traces to a real source — listings and sold records here on The Briar Lounge, blended with source-attributed market comps from estate dealers, auctions and eBay. We only show a trend when there's enough resale history to mean something.

    How to read this
    • What a “sold record” is. A pipe that changed hands, and the price on file for it. Three kinds, and they are not equally strong: a confirmed sold price (an eBay sold listing, an auction result); a dealer catalogue entry that sold out at its listed price — a real trade, but the listed price is not a confirmed hammer price; and a sold listing here on The Briar Lounge, where for most sales the final price was never captured, so the figure on file is the seller's own asking price. We count all three as units sold, because all three really sold. We don't call any of them verified.
    • Sold vs listed: the headline price is the typical (median) recent sold record where sold records exist — median, so one exceptional pipe can't swing it; if we only have current asking prices, it reads listed instead. We never blend a current asking price into a "sold" figure.
    • Trend is composition-controlled. It's the volume-weighted average of how the same models have resold over time — so a brand can't jump “+50%” just because one expensive pipe sold once. When there isn't genuine like-for-like resale history, you'll see “—”, never a guessed number.
    • Units sold is the volume signal — how many sold records we hold, tracked brand-wide and per model, the way car sales are followed by make and then by model. It's the sturdiest number on this page: the price on a record can be a listed price rather than a confirmed one, but the pipe still left the market. Open a brand to see its volume over time and model-by-model.
    • Market = includes external comps (eBay, estate dealers, auctions). Lounge = from our own listings & sales. New brands join automatically the moment they're listed here.
