Lineage & History · CollectingPeterson Dating: My Dublin-to-Ireland Guide
After 20 years of collecting Petersons, I can date most by their stamps alone. Here's my complete guide to Peterson nomenclature and what each era means for value.

Two identical Peterson pipes can differ in value by $500+ based purely on their stamps. I learned this the hard way when I sold a 1940s Peterson for $200, only to discover later it was actually from the coveted Dublin era and worth $800+.
Why Peterson Dating Matters (And What It's Worth to Know)
Peterson's political history is stamped right on every pipe. When Ireland became a republic in 1949, the stamps changed. When they joined the EU, they changed again. Each change creates a collecting era.
Peterson Dating: My Mastery
Dublin Era (1865-1949): The holy grail. Any Peterson stamped just "Dublin" is pre-1949 and commands serious premiums. I've seen common shapes sell for 3x their modern equivalents.
Republic of Ireland (1949-1969): The transition period. Good value and quality, but not as sought-after as Dublin pipes. Still excellent smokers.
Ireland Era (1969-Present): Modern production. Great pipes, fair prices, but no collector premium yet.
How I Date Any Peterson (My Field Guide)
- 01
Look for the Location Stamp
• "Dublin" only = Pre-1949 (premium era) • "Republic of Ireland" = 1949-1969 (good era) • "Ireland" = 1969-present (modern era)
- 02
Check for Patent Numbers
Early Petersons often have patent numbers that help narrow the date: • Patent 417574/07 = 1910s-1920s • Patent 518633/55 = Later production
- 03
Examine the Shape Numbering
Peterson's shape numbering evolved from simple numbers (12, 15) to complex codes (B11, XL02).
