On smooth pipes (Trademark, Castello, Collection, Fiammata), the K stamps — K, KK, KKK, KKKK — indicate grain quality, not size; more Ks mean better grain. Extra-large pieces are stamped G or GG. On carved pipes (Sea Rock, Old Antiquari) the Ks originally denoted size. The castle mark with an internal number appeared in 1987 for the 40th anniversary: the number equals the year offset from 1947, so 40 = 1987. This dating stamp is applied only to the smooth Castello grade and above.
Sea Rock is a hand-carved rusticated finish where grain quality is not the point — the relief texture and dark stain are the aesthetic. Collection is a smooth finish reserved for blanks with exceptional straight grain. Both use the same Ligurian briar. On the secondary market, Collection and Occhio di Pernice pieces typically command higher premiums because grain is directly visible; Fiammata Greatline pieces are the most sought-after, while Sea Rock often represents the best price-per-smoke value.
